Sowing Instructions:

Transplanting (Recommended)

  • Timing: Sow seeds 8-10 weeks before the last frost date.

  • Post-Frost: Transplant outdoors after the last frost.

  • Sowing Depth: Barely cover seeds, as light aids in germination.

  • Container Size: Once the first true leaves appear, transplant seedlings to larger containers or cell packs.

Direct Seeding

  • Soil Temperature: Sow directly into the seedbed when soil warms to 65°F (18°C).

  • Sowing Method: Plant in groups of 3-4 seeds.

  • Thinning: Thin to one plant per group when true leaves appear.

Winter Mulching

  • Location: In colder climates, apply winter mulch after the first frost to protect plants from heaving due to freeze and thaw cycles.

Light Preference

  • Ideal Conditions: Prefers part shade but will tolerate full sun in cooler summer climates, provided plants are regularly watered.

Plant Characteristics

  • Height: Varies based on species.

  • Spacing: Maintain a distance of 10-15 inches between plants.

Hardiness Zones

  • Suitable for Zones 3-9.

Harvesting

  • Timing: Harvest when half of the florets on a stem are open.
